Oz the Great and Powerful Review

When Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is hurled into a twister he ends up in the magical Land of Oz.  The people of Oz believed that this great wizard fell from the sky in order to fulfill a prophecy and save them from the Evanora (Rachel Weisz).  Oscar wants to be a great magician, but it conflicts with his selfish, egotistical personality.  He meets many people on his journey through Oz that help him realize if you believe in something, anything is possible.

Oz the Great and Powerful was incredible! It was even better than I expected it to be.  James Franco's performance is amazing.  Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams play three beautiful, charismatic witches.  Zach Braff is hilarious as Oscar's side kick flying monkey.  His mix of sarcasm and wit are the perfect combination to add humour and a bit of comedy to this dramatic movie.

The scenery and costumes were bright, bold, and exquisite. Watching it in 3D made the special effects even more spectacular.  I loved the conflict between good verse evil and how through Oscar's search for greatness, he found his happily ever after when he found goodness.

After sharing my thoughts on this movie, I learned people were upset that Disney had remade The Wizard of Oz.  This movie is nothing close to a remake.  It is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and helps answer that age old question, "Who is that man behind the curtain?"

    1. I agree. I was surprised at some of the critics remarks about James Franco. I thought he was perfect for the part.

  2. Last week Amazon ran a special on the entire 14 book set of Oz books for your Kindle at 95 CENTS. Well, I have to admit that I never read the books so at that price I swooped it up. Since then I have been reading voraciously and loving it. I haven't seen any previews of this movie and don't know anything about it (la la land over here) but from what I sort of can tell it does include the back story from the original book and how Oz got there in the first place. Glad you enjoyed it- I will be keeping an eye out over here for the home rental. Ok for kids you think?

    1. I have never read any either, but just got the original from the library to read to my fifth grade class. The movie does fill in the gaps of how the wizard came to Oz. It sn't appropriate for our kids, yet. I'd say older children might be ok. There were some parts with the witches and special effects that would scare little ones. You and your husband would definitely enjoy it though.
